In a hurry, and stuck behind a dirty pickup truck on a lonely two-lane road in western North Carolina, corporate executive Bryce Stanford attempts a bad pass around the wrong guy. The events which follow will test his courage, his strength...and his soul. This is the story of a morally bankrupt man who seemingly has everything, until suddenly his every decision, every word, even every thought could make or break his fate. In the surreal tradition of The Twilight Zone, "Friday Afternoon" is an unforgettable journey into the inner reality of who a man really is, and whether he can survive a test which he does not know he is taking. As D.G. Bracey writes about this story, "T.D. Johnston's 'Friday Afternoon' is a percussive burst of genius."

Wager read this story and NOT think of it the next time you're stuck behind a truck/lorry/van on your way to somewhere IMPORTANT. Impossible. T.D.Johnston has taken a situation most of us can only too painfully relate to and explored it, disected, vivisected, magnified, diluted and saturated every inch of those endless minutes in a busy life and then he did what great writers do he threw rocks at the protagonist. At which point readers disassociate with the protagonist tells a great deal about the reader and is a tribute to this well-crafted story.
Mr. Johnston has given us reason to pause and consider the possible consequences of our behavior. It should also give the narcissistic folks of the world motivation to think about how they treat others. The end, while not entirely unexpected, still gives us something to ponder as we put it down. I read this story in the bound edition of, "Short Story America Anthology" rather than the edition. Mr. Johnston has more to offer in this volume of really top notch, contemporary Short Story writers and I recommend it highly. It is available from . I eagerly look forward to reading more of this outstanding author's work.
This is book of short stories. Everyone of these stories is different and unique. And I will say, some are a little strange, like the blurb says…The Twilight Zone. But that just keeps you reading to the next one. You never know what the next story will bring.

My favorite was hard to choose. I narrowed it down to The Interruption of Thomas Darrow. This little short is about the execution of the co-conspirators in the Lincoln assassination. One was a woman named Mary Suratt. She was the first woman executed by the USA, and she was probably innocent.

There are many tales in this collection and if you appreciate short stories I highly recommend this selection. I enjoyed the variety and diversity. Very unique indeed!
Wow, this story is one great deterrent to giving in to road rage! Have a bottle of Pepto ready because the sick feeling in the pit of your stomach starts early and builds with every page until you arrive at the horrifying conclusion. A macabre, but intellectually sophisticated masterpiece. A cross between Hitchcock and Rod Serling.
Once you start you won't stop reading until you've finished. Very fine story telling and carefully crafted word imagery. This story would make a great short film.
Scary as the story is, no blood is actually shed but you can sure imagine it will be. By the the story's end I felt really sorry for Bryce who knew he had gotten himself into a real s*** storm. I loved the ways the two main characters moved alternately from humility to arrogance. The books is a quick read and a masterful immersion into a scary, scary place. Loved it!
T.D. Johnston's, Friday Afternoon is one of those rare stories that entertain us with the movement of the story while at the same time makes us analyze the deeper more obscure aspects of our spiritual or lack thereof. Friday Afternoon is a suspense story with the vividness of a motion picture with delightful flashes of breath taking moments.

I read Friday Afternoon, late on a Saturday night and I couldn't put it down. A must read.
Definitely different than expected, excited it will be a movie. This was a voyage to the realization of some eternal truths.
